Autoimmune Diseases

Research Interests

Autoimmune diseases arise when one’s immune system attacks and damages one’s own tissues. Approximately 4% of the world’s population is affected by an autoimmune disease. Currently, there is an urgent need for more effective and safer treatment for autoimmune disease. The goal of our research is to understand the causes of autoimmune response and specific clinical traits of autoimmune disorders in humans and develop novel biomarkers, biologics and diagnostic assays to better predict, prevent and treat autoimmune disease.

Our multidisciplinary approaches include both wet-lab and dry-lab techniques, spanning the fields of immunology, genetics, molecular and cellular biology, and bioinformatics. We are currently developing small-molecule inhibitors against UBASH3A, a risk factor shared by multiple, distinct autoimmune diseases, as a new therapy and preventive strategy. In addition, we employ CRISPR/Cas9 and base editing to modulate T cell function for the development of genotype-directed, individualized treatment for autoimmune disease and other immune-related conditions.
