A New Chapter of Cooperation from the ICGEB China Regional Research Centre Director’s Visit to Africa

From May 18 to 21, 2026, Professor Yang Yili, Director of the ICGEB China RRC, traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, to attend the 32nd ICGEB Board of Governors. As a global organization with 69 member states, the meeting was attended in person by governors from 36 countries, with representatives from the remaining countries participating online.
The Chinese delegation, led by the China National Center for Biotechnology Development and including officials from Taizhou Medical High-tech Zone (Gaogang District) and representatives of the RRC, took part in all activities throughout the meeting. During the session, Director Yang Yili had in-depth exchanges with governors from Italy, South Africa, India, Brazil, Croatia, Ethiopia, Burundi, Angola, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Zimbabwe, and the Republic of Moldova. Broad consensus was reached on deepening bilateral cooperation, mutual support, and promoting the global expansion of Chinese biotech products, further enhancing China’s participation and influence in global biotechnology governance.
Visits to the BETin and Related Enterprises in Ethiopia
From May 16 to 18 and May 21 to 22, 2026, Professor Yang Yili made two visits to Ethiopia, during which he toured the Addis Ababa Biotechnology and Emerging Technologies Institute (BETin) and the College of Biotechnology at Addis Ababa University. Professor Yang Yili held pragmatic discussions with the Director of BETin and the Head of its Biotechnology Department on topics such as joint laboratory establishment, technology transfer mechanisms, and local talent development, and also visited the microbiology and genetics laboratory at Addis Ababa University.
During the two visits, with the assistance of BETin scientists, the Centre also engaged in in-depth talks with local trading company, focusing on providing Ethiopia with affordable biomedical products, laboratory reagents, and so on.
In addition, Professor Yang Yili paid a special visit to Mr. Semere Birhanu, General Manager of the Kilinton Special Economic Zone. The two sides reached a preliminary cooperation agreement, and Mr. Birhanu is expected to pay a return visit to the China Medical City and the China (Taizhou) International Medical Expo in the near future, where a formal cooperation agreement will be signed, opening a new chapter in China-Ethiopia biotech cooperation.
