Deepening China-Cuba Biotech Collaboration: Tripartite MoU Inked by ICGEB China RRC, CIGB and Cuba-China Biotechnology Joint Innovation Center

From September 4 to 5, 2025, the 13th Meeting of the China–Cuba Joint Working Group of Biotechnology Cooperation was held in Wuhan. The ICGEB China RRC was invited to participate. The meeting was attended by Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Jorge Luis Perdomo Di-Lella Martínez and Mr. Xiang Libin, Vice Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission of China. Both sides reached a consensus on deepening cooperation in the field of biotechnology. During the meeting, ICGEB China RRC, the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology of Cuba (CIBG) /Centro de Ingeniería Genética y Biotecnología (CIGB), and Cuba-China Biotechnology Joint Innovation Center (CCBJC) signed an MoU. The three parties will jointly advance transitional research on the anticancer peptide CIGB-300, based on previous work on immunologic cell death (ICD) and the metabolic memory/energetic imprinting mechanisms underlying diabetic complications. This tripartite collaboration marks a new milestone in pragmatic China–Cuba cooperation in biotechnology, laying a solid foundation for the joint advancement of innovative drug R&D and technology commercialization.

On September 8, 2025, Mr. Li Wen, Deputy General Manager of Cuba-China Biotechnology Joint Innovation Center and the Scientific Director Dr. Yasser Perera visited the RRC. The two sides discussed further cooperation, including research on EGF-related epigenetic mechanisms in diabetes within the CIGB-300 project, joint talent exchange and training programs, enhancement of mass spectrometry capabilities, and joint applications for research funding. It has laid a foundation for the subsequent practical cooperation between the two sides in areas such as technology research and development, talent cultivation and resource sharing, and further promoted the in-depth integration of collaborative innovation in the field of biotechnology between China and Cuba.

This cooperation not only marks that the collaboration between China and Cuba in the field of biotechnology has entered a more practical and in-depth new stage, but also establishes a long-term collaborative mechanism for both sides in scientific research innovation, technology transfer and talent cultivation. In the future, all parties will take the Memorandum of Understanding as a guide, continue to deepen joint research and development in key areas such as the anti-cancer peptide CIGB-300, jointly promote the production and application of innovative achievements with international influence, and contribute "China-Cuba wisdom" and "China-Cuba strength" to the global development of bio-medicine.
