ICGEB Director-General Lawrence Banks Visits China to Deepen International Scientific Collaboration
October 18-20, 2025, Dr. Lawrence Banks, Director-General of International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), and Dr. Miranda Thomas, a representative from the ICGEB, conducted a three-day academic exchange visit to Beijing. They were accompanied throughout the visit by Professor Yang Yili, Director of the ICGEB China Regional Research Centre.
At the China Hall of Science and Technology, Dr. Banks held cooperation meeting with Professor Jin Li, President of Fudan University and President of Fudan University Shanghai Medical College, alongside other representatives. The meeting featured productive discussions on deepening strategic cooperation and promoting collaborative scientific research. The Fudan delegation shared insights gained from their recent visit to the ICGEB headquarters in Trieste, leading to in-depth discussions on further expanding international research collaboration and the progress of the 2nd Asian Component. Other attendees included Dr. Miranda Thomas; Professor Yang Yili; Professor TIAN Mei, Director, Center for Advancing Global Collaboration;Dean, Human Phenome Institute, Professor XU Xiaochuang, Executive Vice Dean, Institute of Science and Technology, as well as Geng Hongran and Yang Li from the Biotechnology Development Center and the ICGEB Liaison Office.
Dr. Banks and his delegation also visited the China National Center for Biotechnology Development (CNCBD). The two sides held constructive and in-depth discussions on further deepening and expanding comprehensive collaboration between ICGEB and China in the field of biotechnology. They explored a wide range of mutually interested scientific topics and programs for international talent exchange, reaching several key consensus points that chart a clear course for future cooperation.
The delegation visited Beijing's cultural landmarks, including the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, and the Summer Palace, gaining firsthand experience of China's profound cultural heritage. They also sampled authentic Beijing cuisine, with Dr. Banks speaking highly of the city's long history, rich culture, and unique charm.
