Research direction:
Autoimmune diseases are caused when a person's immune system attacks and damages their body tissues. About 4% of the world's population has autoimmune diseases. At present, there is an urgent need for more effective and safer treatments for autoimmune diseases. The goal of our research is to understand the causes of specific clinical conditions that contribute to the human autoimmune response and autoimmune diseases and to develop new biomarkers, biologics, and diagnostic reagents to predict, prevent and treat autoimmune diseases.
Our multidisciplinary approach includes both wet-lab and dry-lab techniques, covering the fields of immunology, genetics, molecular and cellular biology, and bioinformatics. We are currently developing small molecule inhibitors against UBASH3A, a common causative agent for many different autoimmune diseases, as a new therapy and prevention strategy. In addition, we employ CRISPR/Cas9 and base editing to modulate T cell function to develop new genotype-directed, individualised therapies for autoimmune and other immune-related diseases.
